teacherThrough discussion and a series of intensive exercises, teens attending our two-day experiential workshop learn to establish goals and to actively pursue them.  The workshops provide an environment where each child gains a sense of personal integrity and responsibility by putting social, economic and individual obstacles into perspective. On completion of the workshop, each student receives support and encouragement from one consistent mentor in a two-month coaching program followed by an outdoors Ropes Course. The Ropes Course synthesizes the strengths of each student, allowing them to exhibit courage and confidence in a team environment. Finally, the students are encouraged to participate in a community project, allowing them to give back to their communities.

Of the students in the East Los Angeles area who attended the Torch Training, the average GPA rose from 1.6 to 2.0 and the dropout rate fell from 70% to 30%.  In addition, results show that students who have attended the trainings have:

  • Fewer disciplinary problems
  • Increased regular attendance
  • Disassociation with gangs and drugs
  • Greater interest in learning and discovery
  • Greater self-worth—knowing that they MATTER

Students enrolled in the Torch trainings are not charged a fee—all student fees are paid by scholarship and through generous donations. Trainings are run a minimum of 12 times a year and cost $250 per student or $21 a month for twelve months. By sponsoring a student, you help to change the future not only for a teen who needs love, support and a chance of success, but for their family, their community and the world in which they live.

Our mission and commitment is to change the lives of America's teens by empowering them to discover their greatness as tomorrow's leaders. Your help and partnership is requested. We would like to extend this opportunity to your school to be part of an upcoming Torch Training in 2004.

One youth at a time, we can change the world!
